本書で集めた日本人が知らない基本英単語は、自宅で日本人の女性や子どもたちに英語を教えている筆者の妻のソンヒ・チョイが、ノートにメモしておいたものである。このノートには、アメリカで頻繁に使われている簡単な英単語にもかかわらず、日本人の女性が知らない英単語がぎっしり詰まっている。そのノートを見た筆者が、基本単語が日本ではあまり知られていないことに驚いてしまい、これらの単語と使い方をみなさんに覚え、マスターしてほしいと思ったのが、本書を執筆した動機である。
